  • Sometimes working in this industry (Child & Youth Services) is very sad. I have begun many
posts on the dangers of breeding, and the devastating consequences of
bad parenting. I wonder at the fact that a parent can neglect his or
her child to the point of abuse, and the government merely takes that
child away. Sometimes, if the abuse is severe enough, the parent (and I
use the word "parent" loosely in this case) will be fined or face some
very minor penalites. I think the penalties should be much more severe.
I also think that if you give birth to a child who is later diagnosed
with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FASD), you should face some serious
penalties. Perhaps beaten on the head until YOUR brain doesn't function
properly, and you're left with a low IQ. Perhaps they lobotomize the
part of your brain that regulates emotion or judgement. Or maybe they
just put you in a big arena with a whole bunch of pissed off kids who
entered this world with little chance of a normal life, simply because
mum couldn't kick the sauce. Gladiator style. That's what I'm talking
    about.

In other news, I just watched the X-Men III trailer today, and I nearly
shat my pants! It looks so good! Geeks of the world, unite!

I don't have much else to say, except that I'm about to go watch
Monday's "The Daily Show" that I taped. And that has me more excited
    than, perhaps, it should!

    Cheers!

  • I agree with your Machiavalian idea of justice for abusive parents. What a shame that you don't need a license to reproduce.

  • Well damn. The above comment took away from the question that i wanted to pose to you as soon as i read your post. That question being, would you support the idea of potential parents needing a permit to give birth?

Obviously this can only exist as a hypothectical situation, but how this would be possibly would be say the government had a medical procedure that was completley reversible and was not harmful or potentially harmful in any way of sterilizing both men and female as soon as they were born. For a couple or a person to have a child they must recieve a permit from the government to reverse the procedure. Would you be for or against merely that idea? Has some very interesting pros/cons to each side.

  • Mmmnnnblazen! (in response to the geeks of the world comment you made just there)

also, it was interesting because a friend of mine who works at a restaurant was telling me how her coworker had some customers who came in and the guy said, "she needs a strawberry daquiri right away -- she's pregnant" like cause she's so stressed from pregnancy she needs alcohol. well, they have to serve it up. there's nothing they can do in that case, even though they ethically feel disinclined to serve a prego woman alcohol. i don't know. the world we live in today...

  • I think the problem runs much more deeply than we think. Child abuse has been going on for hundreds of years, if not more. It's ingrained into our DNA by our ancestors, and we don't even know it.

It perpetrates itself because it's such a taboo. These things need to be faced and confrnted by us all, wether it's happened to us or not, even if it's extremely uncomfortable. It's happening right next door to you, right now! Lets become aware right now!

  • The things that kids say and do in my school sometimes are truly saddening.  I have heard 14-year-old girls scream out in the hallway, without a second thought, "SUCK MY CLIT!"  At the end of the day several months ago, one likeable but aimless young man said on the way out of class, "Well, off I go to home.  I wish I could go anywhere else but there.  Well, bye!"  It's truly stunning how many letters that I send to parents are unaddressed and how many phone calls are unreturned.  And I'm in a good school.

  • you know, it's been said time and time again that people should have to get a license to be able to procreate. but i don't think that would do much good - some - but not enough. some of the most intelligent and influential people are abusive to their children. i don't know. it pains me to see such bad treatment of kids. i don't know what a viable solution would be. these are the things i think about late at night when i should be sleeping. blah!! depressing.

and i, too, am soooo excited about the new Xmen movie. i loved the cartoon and i love the movies. always makes for a good time...

  • In China, you're allowed something like one child per family. The government has been known to force illegaly pregnant mothers to abort, or in extreme cases, killing the child at birth!

It made sense to try and curb the amount of Chinese being born as the country was unable to handle those amounts of people. But now the economical climate has changed, and, as far as I know, these things happen alot less.

Knowing the harshness of life for the poor in China, I wonder how many of those children would have lead fufilling lives anyway! Not that I condone taking another's life in any way, but how much do we really know about death anyway? Is it truly something we should live in fear of?

    Neo Humanist Hippie out!!!

  • It certainly is a sad world we live in when one person values anything more than another human life. Espcially that of a child.

  • wait, are you telling me that if a person likes Xmen, that means that the person is a geek?  hmmmmm.   note to self: try to stop liking Xmen.  ok, thanks.
