This last weekend was TCIS's staff retreat at Gwangju....a beautiful mountainous area. We stayed in a nice hotel, yada yada yada.
What most impressed me: we ate a Korean meal one night in the hotel, and there was a show of traditional Korean dancing, drumming, etc. Let me just say--wow. These drummers were unglaublich! Wunderbar! Ausgezeichnet! Basically....amazing. And I thought the African continent had the market cornered on drumming....
So....ne'er was I depressed, to set the record straight. Discouraged, yes. Distracted, yes. But...always hopeful about how things could (and hopefully would) be. And I must say that things are moving in that direction. While I still really miss my dorm guys in Germany, I'm getting to know these ones here, and they're first-class. Great kids.

Just a few pictures to enjoy: 1) The dorm guys, all sweaty after basketball, ping-pong, tennis, and cross-country; (2) One of the menu items for room service at the hotel in Gwangju; (3) Peppers drying out in the sun...a common scene in Korea right now, just before a frenzy of Kimchi-making!; (4) O-Jung Dong...the area that I live in...lots of bright lights and busy traffic...but it is now home.
Hope this entry sits well with all you who thought I was, to quote Anne of Green Gables, in the depths of despair.
Love to all.....

great picture of the city! it's so colorful...it's luring me....I can't look away....!
ahah i dont know how you do it, with a room full of koreans. I mean i could get along a few like sunni, squid and chan, but thats a room full. ahah just kidding Drew.
Hope things are going well. are you getting internet in your room soon?
i like it when you use German to express a thought and when you list the names of places. for today, i meticulously pronounced each German word to express "amazing", and then i had claudia correcting me in pronouncing Gwangju. she said that the first letter is like a "g" and "k" pronunciation. so it's like a very brief educational class.
i like the very last picture. it's so bright. i am glad you are starting to settle in. with love, ~rejcel

guess what happened to me today? this lady walked up to me to witness to me and invite me to a campus bible study at my new school. she happened to be korean, has been living in the country for 5 years and speaks pretty good english, not perfect. i told her that i am a believer and i would certainly be interested in studying the bible. then she asked me how i feel about helping her and one of her friends learn how to pronounce some words in her english bible, and would i be willing to practice conversational english with them, and she would pay me ... and so on. craziness. she was so cool, i wanted to be her friend right away and hug her and refuse her money for any purpose whatsoever.
also learned in my japanese lit class that way back in the way back when, technological advancements flowed from korea into japan -- korea once had the technological upper hand, can you dig it?
Greetings from Sonne!!! Here's something that might encourage you... The other night at our All Dorm intro meeting, I challenged the second floor guys (all but two are new) to step up since there won't ben RA on the flooror them. The new guys smirked and said they'd get along fine without one. I told them, "Hey, it's not about control."?I then asked the returning guys, "How many of you would want Drew back?" to which ALL of their hands SHOT up (including all the first floor guys). I pointed out to the new guys that RAs weren't all about running their lives but building friendships. The returning guys echoed my sentiment. Kudos to you.
my dearest good to hear that things are coming your way slowly. life is good adn all the new guys seem to be awesome. i think this will be a great year. love roiboss
